One floor up you’ll find the ‘Berber corner’, a cosy nook covered with Berber rugs and piled with cushions found in the souk – the perfect place to curl up and read a book, take a nap or smoke a water pipe. Here one finds a charming single room with en-suite bathroom. On the next floor are two double rooms (both with large double beds). All the bedrooms have been decorated with local products, antique painted chests, brass lamps and Moroccan rugs and textiles. They are equipped with electric fans for the summer months and down comforters for the winter. On this floor you’ll also find a bathroom with traditional tile floor, cedarwood ceiling beams and ‘madlouk’ plaster walls (this is a traditional Fassi wall plaster, here made by the city’s most eminent expert, Si Abdel Haq Figuigui). The bathroom has modern bathroom fixtures and a ‘western’ toilet. On the top floor of the house is the ‘menzeh’ room, a sort of winter garden library with large shuttered windows giving a fantastic view of the rooftops of Fez. One of the finest attributes of Dar Aqiba is its rooftop garden terrace. Tiled in traditional terra cotta and furnished with mosaic tables and comfortable sofas and chairs, you can gaze at the most incredible view of Fez, including the Merenid tombs. In the summer months, it’s a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the breeze from Mount Zalagh or experience a romantic Fez sunset. This is your window on Fez – watch the comings and goings in the street and listen to the sounds of Fez. See the house photos > |
